Grade 3 Science & Art Blog: Dinosaur Creations! 🦕🎨
This week, Grade 3 students combined their science learning with art to explore the fascinating world of dinosaurs! Students researched a dinosaur of their choice and brought their learning to life through a beautiful watercolour landscape and dinosaur silhouette art project.
First, students created a watercolour background, experimenting with colour and blending techniques to represent prehistoric environments. Then, they carefully painted the silhouette of their chosen dinosaur, thinking about shape, size, and placement within their landscape.
This cross-curricular project helped students connect their understanding of Alberta’s prehistoric past with important art concepts while expressing their creativity.
Science Learning Outcomes
This learning connects to understanding Alberta’s prehistoric environment and fossils, including:
Millions of years ago, Earth’s surface in Alberta included lush tropical forests and an inland sea that supported dinosaur life
Fossilized dinosaur bones can be collected from the surface or by excavating layers of Earth
Fossils have been found in several locations in Alberta, including the badlands, Grande Cache area, and Fort McMurray area
Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Alberta’s badlands
Many dinosaurs lived in Alberta, such as Albertosaurus, Edmontosaurus, Nodosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus
Art Learning Outcomes
This learning connects to visual art techniques and composition, including:
Landscapes can show foreground, middle ground, and background
Size variations among objects create the illusion of depth
Colour can be used to appear bright or dull to create mood and contrast
Ask Your Child
What dinosaur did you research, and what did you learn about it?
What did Alberta look like millions of years ago?
Where can fossils be found in Alberta?
How did you use colour to create mood in your painting?
How did you add depth to your artwork?
Thank you for your continued support as we explore science through creativity and build connections across subjects!
