What did students do this week?
This week in Grade 3, we learned about Terry Fox and his inspiring journey across Canada. Students shared what they already know about Terry Fox and learned more about our Canadian hero. Terry showed courage, determination, and kindness as he ran to raise money for cancer research, even though he had only one leg.
What did students do with this information?
We read stories and watched videos about Terry Fox. Students determined adjectives describing Terry Fox and displayed them. We wrote about what Terry’s message means to them and how they can show determination in their own lives. Students took their key information and put it into sentences, including capital letters and end punctuation. Students listened and sang to the Terry Fox song, "Finish It." Please have your child play the beautiful song for you.
We prepared for our school’s Terry Fox Run. We practiced running, jogging, and walking at our own pace. We set personal goals for distance and effort, just like Terry set a goal to run across Canada. Students learned how to warm up, stay safe, and use teamwork and encouragement to support their classmates. We were very excited to be amazing role models for our kindergarten buddies and run with them.
By learning about Terry Fox, we connected reading, writing, movement, and wellness. Terry’s story inspires us to believe in ourselves and to keep trying, even when things are hard.
